Frequently asked Questions

Where and when is practice?
  • Practices are held at the Cider Mill South Gym weekdays from 6 to 7:30pm.  See the Practice & Fee Info page for details.

Is a USA Wrestling membership required?
  • The short answer, YES, but our team will purchase it for all athletes.
  • Why?  We are a chartered club of USA Wrestling and we are required to ensure all athletes, coaches and any assistants on the mat have a current USAW membership to join our team and take part in our practices and competitions.
  • Parents, you will be required to create a profile for your athlete through USAW and affiliate their profile with our club, prior to the start of the season.
  • Go to the USA Wrestling website for more information (www.themat.com).

What gear is needed?
  • For practice, wrestlers should have wrestling shoes, headgear, and a mouthguard (if wrestler has braces). Shorts and a t-shirt or sweatpants/shirt are suitable for practice.
  • For matches, wrestlers should have a uniform, which is a one-piece singlet or a two piece option that is a compression or snug fitting shirt & compression shorts or shorts with NO POCKETS.
  • If you need directions in obtaining these items, please contact us.

What should my wrestler wear and bring to practice?
  • Shorts or sweats, t-shirt, wrestling shoes, headgear and a mouthguard if wrestler has braces.
  • Please DON’T wear wrestling shoes outside, to avoid bringing dirt and germs onto the practice mats.
  • Please bring a full water bottle!

What’s is the policy regarding drop off and pick up?
  • Parents are free to drop-off and pick-up or stay to watch, but please arrive minimum 5 minutes early for start and be on time for end of practices. Wrestlers are to be geared up with shoes on and ready to start warmups at practice start time - 6:00pm.  PRACTICES WILL START PROMPTLY!
  • As a team, we ask all wrestlers to help roll up the mats at the end of practice before leaving.

How can I get involved and help the team?
  • Please let us know if you would be interested in helping in any capacity, as we are a volunteer organization and appreciate any and all assistance! Some of the things parents can help with:
    • Practice Side Lines – during practice sessions, we need someone to monitor the Cider Mill gym door entrance to help let people in and out, as the door must stay locked per school policy.
    • Coach Assistant – if you have wrestling or grappling background, our coaches can use help on the mats with keeping kids on task and performing proper technique, especially as they are learning and practicing the new skills.  All parents helping on the mats are required to obtain a USA Wrestling Leader card, which requires a background check, SafeSport training and a fee.  Go to the USA Wrestling website for more information (www.themat.com). To coach at tournaments, an additional Copper Level certification is required.

What’s up with competitions?
  • All competitions are optional, based on comfort level and readiness of each individual athlete. Coaches will be happy to discuss readiness with the parents.
  • There are optional wrestling tournaments throughout the season, which usually take place on Sundays. We will share a schedule of which ones we plan to attend as a team. These competitions require a separate registration fee paid to the tournament directors / organizers. We will send coach(es) to the end of season state qualifier and state tournament to support any of our wrestlers who choose to participate.
  • Additionally, we will look to schedule one or more scrimmages or competitions with a team from a nearby town during the season. These are typically held on a weekday in lieu of a practice session. Scrimmages are informal and run more like a practice with short “live goes” included, giving our wrestlers match-like experience with a different set of partners. Competitions would have our wrestlers matched up with opposing
wrestlers of similar ages, weight and experience for live matches. These scrimmages and competitions may require travel to the opposing team’s location if we are not hosting.

Is wrestling a safe sport?

How do we get team gear?
  • We will open a swag shop before the start of the season. Show your team spirit and support our wrestlers by sporting the latest gear.

How do we stay in contact with the team, parents & coaches during the season?
  • Your athlete will be rostered to a team (based on grade, the Junior Squad or the Warrior Squad) in the TeamLinkt app.  In the app you will be able to message coaches and the rest of the team.  See links below to get the app.
